700% increase in women incarcerated from 1980 to 2019
Women are also more likely than men to be imprisoned for drugs, according to a report from The Sentencing Project
The number of incarcerated women increased more than 700% from 1980 to 2019: 26,378 to 222,455.
The rate of female imprisonment is twice as high as men since 1980.
Black women are incarcerated 1.7 times more than white women.
Black women’s imprisonment has decreased since 2000 while Hispanic women has increased.
Top ten states with the highest rates: Idaho, Oklahoma, Kentucky, South Dakota, Wyoming, Arizona, Montana, Arkansas, West Virginia, Texas.
Women are more likely to be incarcerated for drug offenses than men.
